Dear friend with Diabetes,

If you are like most people who have type 2 diabetes, then you are most likely sick and tired of the drugs and what the medical industry has provided you thus far…

It is no secret that many people who suffer from type 2 diabetes face severe complications that come with serious frustration, depression and anxiety.

For many, the medical industry and modern medicine have little to no answers at all concerning type 2 diabetes.  Often times, it’s one medical procedure after another with little hope for answers.

Laser surgery is prescribed or recommended due to eye damage.  Exercise is recommended, managing blood glucose levels is recommended and taking insulin shots — among so many drugs — are recommended.

It is one thing after another for most type 2 diabetes sufferers.

“Type 2 Diabetes Can Be Cured Naturally Without Toxic Drugs!”

…Imagine being able to fend off the devastating effects of Diabetes, regardless of your family history with this disease.

You see, my family has a long history of diabetes and far too many limb amputations as a result. So I’m well aware of how rough it can be when you or your loved one have diabetes.

One day you think you have it under control and the next thing you know you just lost your right leg and your going blind!

Sound almost like a scary horror movie, right?

But, the truth is, this is an everyday reality to people who have diabetes. Complications from diabetes can lead to Blindness, Kidney Failure, Heart Disease, Nerve Damage, Limb Amputations and even Death

If your doctor confessed that there is nothing you can do besides monitoring your blood sugar levels, taking insulin shots, exercising and perhaps laser surgery for your eyes or maybe amputations, then this could be the most important letter you’ve ever read!

If this is what you’ve experienced, don’t worry, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I know how you feel. Having problems like these can be devastating, and will ultimately affect the quality of your life.

I felt the same way too! My name is Michael Dess, 52 years old. I’m just like you, one of the 20.8 million people in the United States who suffer from diabetes until I discovered a Traditional Natural Herbal Formulation that was used hundreds of years ago, and still being widely used today by the native Asian to lower blood sugar level, reduce cholesterol, control blood pressure and make them feel young again with abundance energy.

Believe me, if you’re looking for a solution to the following problems…

Constantly having to monitor what you eat, and not being able to normal meal or night out with your friends

Endure stabbing pins and needles foot PAIN 4 or 5 times everyday for insulin injection

Interrupted Sleep due to Frequent Urination & Low Energy Level

Erectile Dysfunction & Low Sexual Stamina

Living in fear that one day, chances are you’ll experience detrimental complications derived from diabetes i.e. heart diseases, kidney failure, high blood pressure, blindness, amputations & etc…

Damaging side effects of Diabetes Drugs i.e headaches, heart failure, liver damage & etc

Very risky or Unable to have a child if you’re a woman

Unable to eliminate diabetes for good and that you’re condemned to live with diabetes for the rest of your life.

…Then you have come to the right place.

I have been diabetes for 6 to 7 years now. For years I suffered with the severe pins and needle PAIN with  peripheral neuropathy in my feet. However, this was not the worst part…. it was the complications caused by diabetes that was unbearable

Sometimes my high sugar level made my blood pressure so high that I had to lie down in bed for most of the day with double dose of insulin and blood pressure medications.

My eyesight was growing dimmer and dimmer and seems like laser surgery was imminent…

My doctor told me that there was nothing modern medication could do for me except that I monitor my blood sugar level daily, taking insulin shots, exercise and  pray to god my kidney, heart , lever were still intact.

“Don’t Leave Your Diabetes To Doctors… Prescription Drugs Can Be Just As Bad As Diabetes Itself”

Listen : call me old fashion in my values, if you want. But I’m going to pull the devious rug out from under the unethical profit-driven salesman…disguised as a doctors.

I believe it is completely reasonable to expect our doctors to be objective and impartial when it come to giving us advice on various treatment. However, their objectivity is disturbingly questionable when the only option presented to us a cure is the long term medication like insulin injection for the rest of your life.

The Toxic side-effects of them are…

  • Weight Gain
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Nausea, Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Liver Damage
  • Heart Failure
  • Headaches
  • And that’s just naming a few

Your are not alone though because, in just the United States alone, diabetes affects over 20.8 millions people or roughly 8% of adults age 20 or over and cost the nation more than $100 billion each year. Internationally, the figures for diabetes stricken people are even more shocking!

When Morality Comes Up Against Profit, Unfortunately It’s Always the Profit Wins…

Don’t let the slick salesman in the garb of a doctor’s coat ” trick ” you into having life long treatment of drugs, alternative treatment with herbs could be the answer to your diabetes.

I’ve personally benefited immensely from this traditional formulation and am really delighted that I have the opportunity to introduce it to all the men & women in the world so that every one of us can get rid of diabetes  once and for all.

What Exactly Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high glucose ( sugar ) levels in the blood. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, regulate the amount of glucose in our blood.

In patients with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not adequately respond to the insulin it is producing. This cause blood sugar levels to be higher than normal.

Diabetes can be associated with serious complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, stroke and lower-limb amputations, but steps can be taken to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.

Type 1 Diabetes : Type 1 Diabetes ( previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus ( IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes ) develops when the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, which make insulin.

Type 1 Diabetes usually occurs in children and young adults, who must have insulin delivered by injections or a pump in order to survive. Type 1 Diabetes may account for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Risk factors include autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors.

Type 2 Diabetes : Type 2 Diabetes ( previously known as non insulin-dependant diabetes mellitus   ( NIDDM ) or adult-onset diabetes ) develops gradually, and is usually caused by a combination of impaired secretion of insulin and reduced sensitivity of the body’s cells to insulin ( insulin resistance ). As a result, blood glucose levels become elevated.

Type 2 Diabetes usually occurs in adults, however it is increasingly being diagnosed in people at younger age, even in childhood and adolescence. Type 2 Diabetes may account for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, and the prevalence is rising at an alarming rate throughout the world.

This is believed to be due to increases in longevity, sedentary lifestyles and a dramatic upsurge in obesity.

Type 2 Diabetes can be controlled.

Therapeutic lifestyle management such as following a careful diet and exercise program, and losing excess weight may help, though oral medications are often necessary. Risk factors include old age, obesity, a family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.

African Americans., Hispanic / Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islander are at particularly high risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

Other types you should be aware of…

Impaired Glucose Tolerance ( IGT ) : Impaired Glucose Tolerance is an intermediate state between normal blood glucose control and type 2 diabetes. IGT is an early sign that a person’s carbohydrate metabolism is impaired. It carries a high risk of progressing to Type 2 Diabetes.

IGT ( and Type 2 Diabetes ) result from a combination of impaired secretion of insulin and reduced sensitivity of the body’s cell to insulin ( insulin resistance )

Gestational Diabetes : Gestational Diabetes is a form of glucose intolerance diagnosed in some women during pregnancy, but usually disappeared after the mother gives birth. Treatment is required to normalize blood glucose levels to avoid complications in the infant.

Gestational Diabetes occurs more frequently among African Americans, Hispanic / latin Americans, and Native Americans. It is also more common among obese women and women with a family history of diabetes.

Secondary Diabetes : Secondary Diabetes can result from other conditions such as specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infection, and other damage to or diseases of the pancreas.

How Is Diabetes Be Diagnosed

Type 1 : Patients with Type 1 Diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time, and the condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting.

Urinalysis of an acutely ill Type 1 Diabetes patient will detect high glucose levels, and high levels of ketones.

Ketones are produced by the breakdown of fat and muscle, and they are toxic at high levels. Ketones in the blood can cause a condition called ” acidosis ” ( low blood pH ). Blood glucose levels are also high.

Type 2 : Patients with Type 2 Diabetes develop symptoms over a longer period of time. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when:

The blood glucose is 126 milligrams per deciliter       ( mg/dl ) or higher on two occasions after fasting  (abstaining from food) for 8 or more hours; or…

The blood glucose level is 200 mg/dl or higher at any time between meals with symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, urination, and fatigue; or…

A blood glucose level drawn two hours after drinking a 75-gram glucose solution is 200mg/dl or higher.

Diabetes : Risk Factors and Preventive Measures

Risk factors are characteristics that can predispose you to developing a condition or disease. Just because you have one or more risk factors does not mean you will get diabetic. Risk factor for Type 1 Diabetes are not as clearly defined as for Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes risk factors include…

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Autoimmune disease, where the body mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells
  • Environmental factors

Type 2 Diabetes risk factors includes…

  • Age of 45 years or older
  • Obesity
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Diabetes during pregnancy
  • Impaired Glucose Tolerance ( IGT )
  • Physical inactivity
  • Being a Native American, African American, Hispanic / Latino American, Asian Americans, or a Pacific Islander

What Are The Problems Associated With Diabetes?

Many people with diabetes eventually develop complications, especially if it is not controlled well. Even if the diabetes is controlled well, complications can still occur. The good news is that short-term complications can be easy to fix and that proper treatment of diabetes usually delays complications.

The bad news is that long-term complications are difficult to control and can cause someone to die earlier than normal. Keep in mind as you read this section that there are some individuals who have had diabetes  for over 50 years and have experienced few complications

This is how Diabetes becomes a Silent Killer

1. Hypoglycemia : A very common short-term complication of diabetes. This complication can occur during treatment if the amount of food eaten and the amount of insulin taken are not balanced properly. Hypoglycemia is more common in people with Type I diabetes but can occur in people with Type 2 Diabetes who take sulfonylurea drugs.

Sulfonyurea drugs increase the production of insulin from cells in the pancreas. If untreated, hypoglycemia can cause seizures, which are involuntary muscle movements and/or decreased awareness of the environment due to overexcitement of nerve cells in the brain. Ketoacidosis  is an example of a short-term complication of diabetes.

2. Infection : High levels of sugar in the blood make it more difficult for the body to fight against infections. This can lead to infections of the urinary tract, which is the part of the body that deals with the formation and excretion of urine (pee). To excrete means to release from the body as waste.

3. Eye Problems : Eye problems can develop as a complication, such as retinopathy (also known as diabetic retinopathy), which is damage to the retina and the blood vessels that serve it. The retina is an area at the back of the eye that is sensitive to light.

Blood vessels are tube-shaped structures that carry blood to and from the heart. Both large and small blood vessels also start to break down quicker in people with diabetes mellitus. Blood may also have a difficult time moving throughout the body as a result of diabetes mellitus.

4. Peripheral Neuropathy : Damage to nerve fibers outside of the brain or spine. Peripheral neuropathy can cause a gradual loss of sensation starting at the hands and feet, which sometimes moves up the arms and legs.

Loss of feeling and poor blood circulation makes the body more susceptible to ulcers (open sores) and gangrene (tissue death due to poor blood supply or infection of a wound.). Peripheral neuropathy can also cause dizziness when standing up as well as impotence in men.

5. Problems With Sexual Function : Diabetes may cause difficulties during sexual intercourse, such as erectile dysfunction, soft erection & etc.

6. Kidney Damage : Kidney damage can occur as a complication of diabetes mellitus, which can lead to kidney failure.

7. Heart Disease : Another complication of diabetes mellitus is a higher risk for atherosclerosis, which is a narrowing of arteries (blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart). Atherosclerosis can cause damage to large blood vessels, which is a major cause of stroke and coronary artery disease.

A stroke is a burst artery (a type of blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart) or a blockage of an artery in the brain. Coronary artery disease is a narrowing of coronary arteries, which supply the heart with blood. The narrowing of coronary arteries causes heart damage. People with diabetes also have a greater chance to have increased levels of cholesterol, which can speed up the development of atherosclerosis. Cholesterol is a waxy, fatty substance found only in animal tissues.

8. Other Complications : High Blood Pressure, Heart Disorders, Strokes and Cataracts are additional complications associated with diabetes mellitus. Cataracts is a darkening of the lens in the eye. The lens is an organ located between the colored part of the eye, that bends light as it enters the eye.

A very important issue for people with diabetes mellitus to be concerned about is good foot care. This is because one complication of diabetes mellitus is ulcers (open sores) on the feet. In severe cases, ulcers can develop into gangrene. Gangrene is death of a tissue, usually due to a loss of blood supply. If a foot sore develops, you should see the doctor immediately.

If you’d like to say goodbye to insulin injection, stop living on fear of the deathly diabetes complications and restore your overall health, feel YOUNG, HEALTHY, VIBRANT, SEXUALLY ACTIVE & CONFIDENT All Day…Everyday and enjoy your life to the fullest, then this might be the most important letter you’ll ever read.

Here’s why:

Fact : According to American Diabetes Association, In United States alone, the statistic of prevalence of diabetes are as below…

Total: 20.8 million children and adults — 7.0% of the population — have diabetes.

Diagnosed: 14.6 million people

Undiagnosed: 6.2 million people

Pre-diabetes: 54 million people

1.5 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years or older in 2005.

Age 20 years or older: 20.6 million, or 9.6% of all people in this age group have diabetes.

Age 60 years or older: 10.3 million, or 20.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes.

Men: 10.9 million, or 10.5% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes although nearly one third of them do not know it.

Women: 9.7 million, or 8.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes although nearly one third of them do not know it. The prevalence of diabetes is at least 2 to 4 times higher among non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, and Asian/Pacific Islander women than among non-Hispanic white women.

Fact : Complications of diabetes

Heart disease and stroke

Heart disease and stroke account for about 65% of deaths in people with diabetes.
Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes.
The risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times higher and the risk of death from stroke is 2.8 times higher among people with diabetes.

In women with diabetes, deaths from heart disease have increased 23 percent over the past 30 years compared to a 27 percent decrease in women without diabetes. Deaths from heart disease in men with diabetes have decreased by only 13 percent compared to a 36 percent decrease in men without diabetes.

High blood pressure

About 73% of adults with diabetes have blood pressure greater than or equal to 130/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or use prescription medications for hypertension.

Diabetic retinopathy causes 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness each year making diabetes the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age.
In people with type 1 diabetes, therapy that keeps blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible reduces damage to the eyes by 76% (New England Journal of Medicine, September 30, 1993). Experts believe that these results can also be applied to those with type 2 diabetes.

Mexican Americans are almost twice as likely and non-Hispanic blacks are almost 50% as likely to develop diabetic retinopathy as non-Hispanic whites.

Kidney disease

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% of new cases in 200
In 2002, 44,400 people with diabetes began treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
In 2002, a total of 153,730 people with ESRD due to diabetes were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant.
In people with type 1 diabetes, therapy that keeps blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible reduces damage to the kidneys by 35% to 56% (New England Journal of Medicine, September 30, 1993). Experts believe that these results can also be applied to those with type 2 diabetes.

Non-Hispanic blacks are 2.6 to 5.6 times as likely to suffer from kidney disease with more than 4,000 new cases of ESRD each year. Mexican Americans are 4.5 to 6.6 times more likely and American Indians are 6 times more likely to suffer from kidney disease.

Nervous system disease

About 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage. The results of such damage include impaired sensation or pain in the feet or hands, slowed digestion of food in the stomach, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other nerve problems.
Almost 30% of people with diabetes aged 40 years or older have impaired sensation in the feet (i.e., at least one area that lacks feeling).
Severe forms of diabetic nerve disease are a major contributing cause of lower-extremity amputations.

More than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes.
In 2002, about 82,000 nontraumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in people with diabetes.
The rate of amputation for people with diabetes is 10 times higher than for people without diabetes.

Mexican Americans are 1.8 times as likely, non-Hispanic Blacks are 2.7 times as likely, and American Indians are 3 to 4 times as likely to suffer from lower-limb amputations.

Amputation rates are 1.4 to 2.7 times higher in men than women with diabetes.

Fact : The Dangerous Toll of Diabetes

Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States. Since 1987 the death rate due to diabetes has increased by 45 percent, while the death rates due to heart disease, stroke, and cancer have declined.

Based on death certificate data, diabetes contributed to 224,092 deaths in 2002. Studies indicate that diabetes is generally under-reported on death certificates, particularly in the cases of older persons with multiples chronic conditions such as heart disease and hypertension. Because of this, the toll of diabetes is believed to be much higher than officially reported.

Many people first become aware that they have diabetes when they develop one of its serious and life-threatening complications such as:

  • Heart Disease and Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Blindness
  • Kidney Disease
  • Nervous System Damage
  • Amputations
  • Dental Disease
  • Pregnancy Complications
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Others

Fact : Side -effects of Diabetes prescription Drugs. Many diabetes prescription drugs are known to cause side effects such as weight gain, heart disorder, respiratory infections, nausea, headaches name a few.

Fact : There is a huge myth that has been perpetuated by the health care industry that pharmaceuticals are the answer to both our short and long term optimal health strategies. It is dead wrong, pharmaceutical related deaths or Death By Medicine from improperly prescribed drugs has been reported to be the 3rd largest KILLER in the United States for the last 10 years or so.

Quotes from some M.D. regarding drugs…

Drugs never cure disease. They merely hush the voice of nature’s protest, and pull down the danger signals she erects along the pathway of transgression. Any poison taken into the system has to be reckoned with later on even though it palliates present symptoms. Pain may disappear, but the patient is left in a worse condition, though unconscious of it at the time “

– Daniel. H. Kress, M.D.

The cause of most diseases is in the poisonous drugs physicians superstitiously give in order to effect a cure.

– Charles E. Page M.D.

The person who takes medicine must recover twice, once from the disease and once from the medicine.

– William Osler, M.D.

“Toxins Exist Everywhere!”

Well, as you may have read or heard, toxins exist everywhere! Pharmaceutical drugs are now showing up in our tap and ground water. The first drug was accidentally found by scientists in Berlin Germany when they conducted their routine tap water tests for pesticides. The drug found was Clofibric Acid, a cholesterol-lowering drug. Many other drugs have since been found in our wells and ground water.

You see, scientists have known for years that large amounts of deadly chemicals still lurk in the air, soil, and groundwater near certain hazardous waste sites. While local officials assured residents they were safe, these toxic dumps continued to spew dangerous pollutants—like PCBs, dioxins, and chlorinated pesticides—right into their own backyard…

Each year the United States alone produces over 400 billion pounds of synthetic organic chemicals that are all toxic. This is equivalent to 80 pounds of chemicals per year for every person on the planet. Research shows that there are between 300 to 500 toxins in our tissues today that were never found in the tissues of anyone before 1940. In fact, you’re breathing dioxin right now and hundreds of other chemicals that you cannot taste, see or smell.

Research shows exposure to dangerous environmental contaminants can boost your likelihood of slowly developing diabetes.

Even a vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows. ( Reported By JEFF DONN, MARTHA MENDOZA and JUSTIN PRITCHARD, Associated Press Writers on March 9, 2008 )

Obviously, toxins are GOING to be part of our life whether we like it or not. All we can do is make sure our body is properly cleansing itself of these toxins so they don’t stay in our system.

This is the environmental factor that  make us more pr0ong to modern diseases like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure &etc…

And most diseases develop slowly and it may take some times to exhibit noticeable symptoms of the particular any disease.

So, to safeguard yourself from these problems, proper precautionary steps are advisable.
As a matter of fact…

Prevention is always better than cure.

Sugarex™ is made of five  remarkable traditional medicinal herbs which have long been widely used by native Asian to revitalize their bodies, lower blood sugar & restore overall health.

First, let me introduce the efficacies of the active ingredients in Sugarex™

Five Potent Ingredients of Sugarex™ :

#1: Bitter Gourd Root Extract ( 150mg )

The bitter gourd has excellent medicinal virtues. It is antidotal, antipyretic tonic, appetizing, stomachic, antibilious and laxative. The bitter gourd is also used in native medicines of Asia and Africa.

The bitter gourd is specifically used as a folk medicine for diabetes. Recent researches have established that it contains a hypoglycaemic or insulin-like principle, designated as ‘plant-insulin’, which has been found highly beneficial in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels. It should, therefore, be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic.

Many diabetic patients  take the juice of about four or five fruits every morning on an empty stomach to fight Diabetes. The seeds of bitter gourd can be added to food in the powdered form.

Diabetics can also use bitter gourd in the form of decoction by boiling the pieces in water or in the form of dry powder.

A majority of diabetics usually suffer from malnutrition as they are usually under-nourished. Bitter gourd being rich in all the essential vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin A, B1, B2, C and Iron, its regular use prevents many complications such as hypertension, eye complications, neuritis and defective metabolism of carbohydrates. It increases body’s resistance against infection.

Bitter Gourd is highly effective in helping to fight against blood disorder like blood boils, scabies, itching, psoriasis, ringworm and other fungal diseases.

#2: Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng is an herbal supplement derived from the roots of the ginseng plant. The term “ginseng” usually refers to Panax ginseng (also known as Asian ginseng, Chinese ginseng, or Korean ginseng).

This type of ginseng should not be confused with American ginseng or Siberian ginseng, which have different medicinal properties.

Early studies show promising results for using ginseng for the following uses:

  • Improving mental functioning (such as improving arithmetic skills), although ginseng does not seem to improve memory when used alone
  • Lowering blood sugar in people with diabetes
  • Improving sexual function in men with impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction or ED)
  • Delaying premature ejaculation (when combined with several other herbs and applied to the skin as a cream).

#3: Ophiopogon Root Extract

The herbs is sweet and slightly bitter in flavour, slightly cold in nature and acts on the heart, stomach and lung channels.

Being sweet, cold and moist in nature for nourishing Yin to clear heat and promoting the generation of the body fluid to moisten dryness, the herb mainly clears heart from the lung and stomach, moistens dryness of the lung, nourishes stomach-yin, dispels heat from the heart and relieve vexation.

It is indicated for dry cough due to impairment of Yin caused by dryness of the lung, for thirst due to consumption of the body fluid caused by febrile disease, for excessive heat due to Yin deficiency, for vexation and restlessness, and for other syndromes.

#4: Kudzu Root Extract

Kudzu is a high-climbing, twining, trailing, perennial vine. The huge root, which can grow to the size of a human, is the source of medicinal preparations used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern herbal products.

Kudzu root has been known for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine as ge-gen. The first written mention of the plant as a medicine is in the ancient herbal text of Shen Nong (circa A.D. 100). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, kudzu root is used in prescriptions for the treatment of wei, or “superficial,” syndrome (a disease that manifests just under the surface—mild, but with fever), thirst, headache, and stiff neck with pain due to high blood pressure.

It is also recommended for allergies, migraine headaches, and diarrhea. The historical application for drunkenness has become a major focal point of modern research on kudzu. It is also used in modern Chinese medicine as a treatment for angina pectoris.

#5: Chinese Yam Extract

The Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita) has long been used as a traditional medicine and foodstuff in China, to relieve stomach pain and diarrhoea. Now modern science is revealing that yams have even greater health benefits.

Shujun Wang, at Tianjin University, and co-workers have discovered that the starch in yams helps to reduce hyperlipidaemia — high levels of fatty lipid molecules in the bloodstream — which is a major cause of death throughout the world.

Research found that the rats that were fed yam starch had significantly decreased levels of cholesterol and triglyceride fats in their blood, but those that were fed potato starch showed a change that was not statistically significant. The researchers believe that yam starch is more resistant than potato starch — it escapes digestion in the small intestine and passes through to the large intestine.

This newly discovered role for starch also implies that uncooked yams with intact starch granules (pictured) are better than cooked yams for lowering blood lipids. In future, the researchers hope to uncover the enzyme and gene mechanisms that work to cause this lipid reduction.
